Problem:
Unwanted (tramp) iron was contaminating meat scraps and tallow and damaging process machinery at the Stappenbeck Rendering Company in Rochester, NY, USA (now Baker Comodities).
Solution:
Two Permanent Magnetic Drums were installed in the production line just after the meat exited the cookers and before it entered the expellers. Some 200 pounds (91 kg) of iron were removed weekly. Screen life was extended from 5 ton (4.5 metric ton) runs to 40-50 ton (36-45 metric ton) runs.
